If Levi’s is known for one thing besides their jeans, it’s their jackets, which they’ve produced for over a hundred years. Worn by ranchers, rock stars, truck drivers and rebels, the Levi’s Type III jacket is second only to 501 Jeans in the Levi’s portfolio of iconic garments. The Type III denim jacket, introduced in 1962 and given the lot number 70505 in 1967, is often referred to as the “Trucker Jacket” and is arguably the most popular design of them all. The general design has been in production for Levis for more than 50 years, and over years of big growth, taking Levis from an American national treasure to an international conglomerate. The jacket features orange thread, copper shank buttons with the number 526 on the back side, double sided Big “E” Levis red pocket tab, two chest pockets, and side waist adjustment tabs. The tack thread under the pocket flaps is navy blue. Theres no such thing as an official guide for dating vintage Levis jackets. Much of their original archives were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 and subsequent fire. Introduced in 1962 as Lot Number 557, the Levis® denim jacket was assigned Lot Number 70505 in 1967 to match what would be its companion piece, the new 505 zipper fly jean. First ubiquitous during the Summer of Love, with every decade that followed, celebrities and other style makers continued to embrace the jacket, giving it its own kind of star power. Jack Lucier son of Chris Lucier, who created Levi’s iconic Red Tab, designed the jacket, sketching it out on a note pad. Jack eliminated pleats and copper rivets, key elements of Levi’s denim jackets since the 1880’s, and drew out two V seams that gave a slimming symmetry to an otherwise boxy shape. The resulting design was very flattering for everyone. Shoulder Width 18 inches. Sleeve Length from Neck 29.5 inches. Top of Shoulder to Hem 23 inches. Long sleeves with button closures at cuffs. Large button-flap chest pockets with Big “E” double sided red tab. Dark Copper shank buttons. Two side waist hem adjusters. Made in the USA.
